Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

A dysfunctional American family (a desperately optimistic husband, a level-headed wife, a teenage son, a wild grandfather, and a suicidal uncle) sets off for California in an old yellow VW bus. Their adorable seven-year-old daughter, Olive, has made it to the finals of the “Little Miss Sunshine” pageant. While the film often teeters on the edge of sappiness, the story consistently manages to surprise. The finale, which is as funny as it is daring, still offers no redemption for the tormented family, but it does wonders for your mood.
