Nouvelle Vague, by acclaimed director Richard Linklater (Boyhood), is a stylish and comic tribute to the making of À Bout de Souffle by Jean-Luc Godard, created in the spirit of the French New Wave. Shot in characteristic black and white and delivered with a wink, the film reconstructs the making of the famous classic and celebrates the art of filmmaking, the French Nouvelle Vague, and its legendary figures.

In Paris in 1959, Jean-Luc Godard shoots his debut film À Bout de Souffle in just 20 days, a work that would later grow into a legendary classic. The film marks the beginning of the Nouvelle Vague, a new movement within French cinema. Godard, who until then had been a film critic writing for the renowned Cahiers du Cinéma, decides that making films himself is the best form of criticism. He secures funding for a low-budget film and reshapes François Truffaut’s script — about a gangster couple — in his own way. Despite doubts from cast and crew about Godard’s peculiar working methods, his debut proves to be a bull’s-eye: attracting over 2.5 million viewers in France, earning awards for Godard, and receiving a BAFTA nomination for lead actress Jean Seberg.
