1944: In Vermiglio, a mountain village high in the Italian Alps, the war casts its shadow over daily life, even though it seems far away. The arrival of Pietro, a deserted Sicilian soldier, disrupts the dynamics of the otherwise peaceful village—especially within the family of the local schoolteacher. Lucia, the eldest daughter, feels deeply drawn to the stranger. Over the course of four seasons, we witness the thick layers of snow melt, love blossom, and peace spread across Italy. But while the rest of the world slowly emerges from tragedy, the family faces one of its own.

Director Maura Delpero drew inspiration for Vermiglio from her own family history, loosely modeling the village schoolteacher after her grandfather. In her words, Vermiglio is a story about parents and children, life and death, towering heights, walls of snow, and the scent of warm milk on an icy morning. And always, the mountain—standing as a constant reminder of the villagers’ insignificance.

Vermiglio was awarded the Silver Lion, the Grand Jury Prize, at the Venice Film Festival.

Spoken in Italian, English subtitled.
